Tetanus is an acute bacterial infection that most people only think about after stepping on something sharp. Technically known as lockjaw, the disease is caused by Clostridium tetani. These bacteria are not rare. You will find their spores everywhere, particularly in soil and dust. They are tough. They wait.

The danger lies in how the bacteria survive. They thrive in oxygen-free environments. A deep puncture wound creates the perfect low-oxygen pocket for them to wake up. Once active, the bacteria release a potent toxin. This toxin targets the nervous system. It causes muscles to lock up.

Symptoms can start locally around the injury site. If the toxin enters the bloodstream and reaches the spinal motor ganglia, the effects become systemic. The jaw muscles are almost always the first to go rigid. Hence, the name “lockjaw.” The rest of the body follows with frequent, painful spasms.

Recovering from tetanus does not make you immune. The amount of toxin required to cause disease is so small that natural exposure does not trigger a strong enough immune response. You can get tetanus multiple times. This is why keeping up with boosters matters more than you might realize.
